LIÈGE
The province of Liège is a part of Wallonia which was once known as ‘The Province of Ourthe’ because of the river that attracts many tourist every year to enjoy the views and the nature. Famous for its picturesque landscapes, it’s also known for being the centre of the industrial revolution in the 19th century. There was an abundance of of coal mines and steel factories in the region that attracted many families to settle in this province.
We went to visit the quarry and the atelier situated in Lierneux, where we got to see manufacturing of this unique metamorphic whetstone. We also found other rocks including bluestones and limestones, as well as sand, loam and chalk from different parts of the province. The most special material we found is the internationally-known coticule stone, which has a purple-ish colour and a remarkable strength.
